In a SMPTE ST 2110 environment, a Gateway is the “translator” that sits between the legacy SDI world and the IP world. Bridging these signals isn’t just a physical conversion of a cable — it is a fundamental deconstruction and reconstruction of the media.
When an SDI signal enters a Gateway, the device performs Encapsulation. Unlike older standards (ST 2022-6) that wrapped the entire SDI pipe into IP, modern ST 2110 gateways dissect the signal into independent “Essence” flows:
In SDI, timing is embedded in the physical cable. In IP, timing is carried as data.
The Gateway locks to a PTP Grandmaster and attaches precise RTP timestamps to every packet of video, audio, and data. This allows receivers to perfectly realign the separate essence flows and avoid lip-sync issues.
